John Keiley is not that much of a Tampa Rays fan but he knows a
good bet when he sees one. Keiley (aka the Swami of Salami) is
usually right on with wild sports predictions and gives out free
pizzas when they come true. It all started prior to the NY
Yankees making their debut at Coors Field in 2007. Keiley was so
certain that the Rockies would sweep the pinstripes that painted
the front window of his Johnny’s New York Pizza’s storefront
stating: “When the Rockies sweep the Yankees – Free Pizza for
All.” When the Rockies did, Keiley made true to his word giving
out free pizza later that week. Later that same year, Keiley
predicted that an NFL team would go 16-0 and painted his
Lakewood pizzeria’s window prior to the 2007 NFL season. When
the New England Patriots did – Keiley gave out free pizzas.
Keiley made a third such prediction in June of 2008 again
painting the magic window with the words “When the Tampa Rays
Win the ‘08 World Series – Free Pizza for the World.” This time
Ray’s fell just short of wining it all but they did make it to
their first-ever World Series - a feat nonetheless.
Tampa Rays fans can still though enjoy free pizza this Wednesday
at Keiley’s newest location - My Pizza Peel at 1645 Stout Street
in downtown Denver.
The Tampa Rays, who are in town for a three-game series vs. the
Rockies, will be the guests of honor at the Wednesday
festivities and plan to pay homage to Keiley for helping
generate the buzz the Rays needed to win the 2008 ALCS. St.
Petersburg Times staff writer Marc Topkin will also be on hand.
Topkin’s article on Keiley’s prediction made national news on
the Today Show, CBS Morning News, ESPN and Sports Illustrated.
Rays fans are encouraged to attend and all patrons who wear
their Tampa Rays gear will receive free pizza during the event
which starts at 12 Noon on Wednesday, June 17th.
